How are Real Estate and Urban Planning Professionals Using the Web?
Two-thirds of real estate conference attendees use the Web regularly for urban planning information.

By Ali Valenzuela

Almost two-thirds of real estate and urban planning professionals responding to an Urban Insight survey use the World Wide Web on a regular basis as a source for real estate and urban planning news. Of these, 42% indicated that the Urban Land Institute's website was one of the primary web sites they visit regularly. Of those who use the Web, one-third said that they use the web daily for real estate and urban planning information.

Urban Insight interviewed 59 real estate and urban planning professionals at the 2000 USC-ULI Real Estate Trends Conference held at the Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. The conference was sponsored by the Los Angeles Urban Land Institute, the University of Southern California's Lusk Center for Real Estate, and the Los Angeles Times.

Thirty-seven percent of the 59 respondents reported they used Urban Land Magazine as one of their primary print sources for urban planning news. An equal number indicated they use the Los Angeles Business Journal, while 54% use the Los Angeles Times.

Characteristics of a good web site most important to participants were trends in urban planning and real estate coupled with current information updated on a daily basis.

And who received the most nominations for an expert in urban planning? Stan Ross -- Chairman of the Board of the USC Lusk Center and recently retired managing partner of the E&Y Kenneth Leventhal Real Estate Group.

Urban Insight, a corporate sponsor of the Real Estate Trends Conference, gathered information about Internet usage patterns of the Trends Conference participants for a new daily urban planning California news service, PLANetizen.
